Bear is a well-known brand for offering high-quality mattresses. The most famous of these models is the Original Mattress. This particular kind of foam bed is best known for its stellar performance, with enough responsiveness, pressure relief, and cooling properties to keep sleepers cozy and cool throughout the night.
However, while it delivers very well in soothing nearly everyone, the Bear Original shouldn’t be the only option to look forward to. Many other premium foam beds in the market offer sleepers a diverse range of features and accommodations, some having a few more that the Bear can’t always provide.

Benefits and disadvantages
We were able to evaluate the Bear mattress’s firmness and overall performance in our previous article. It ranks 7th out of 10 in comfort rating, which makes it a medium-firm mattress. When it came to analysing through a series of performance tests, there were a couple of fascinating things that we found:
- Most sleepers found the pressure relief adequate. Considering the memory foam is stacked on top of the high-density foundation, we observed that it held most of the body’s pressure points very well, especially at the back.
- Since we’re talking about an all-foam mattress here, you should expect it to have fantastic motion isolation abilities.
- In terms of ease of movement, the Bear’s overall construction makes it easy for individuals to change to any position, yet somehow also manages to conform their bodies well.
It’s important to note its many benefits but it also has some limitations, especially for heavy-weight sleepers. The Bear Original is not as suitable for heavy individuals – they may gain the comfort and support that it delivers, but they’ll find it a bit uncomfortable in the long run.
Who should use the Bear Original?
- People who like to sleep on memory foam, but don’t enjoy the sinking sensation.
- Athletes, first responders, and other active individuals

Bear Mattress vs. Casper (Casper Original)
Casper, a bed in a box brand, offers a variety of high-quality mattresses, each one designed to suit different circumstances. Casper was established in 2014. It is the first direct to consumer mattress company to promote bed-in-a box delivery.
Its flagship mattress, the Casper Original, is one of its most popular products. The Casper Original measures 12 inches in height and offers a medium-firm level of comfort that most people will love. The queen-sized variant of the Casper Original costs $1,295, which is much pricier than the Bear mattress at $998. The Casper company offers a 10-year warranty on its namesake bestseller and a 100-night sleep trial period.
Similarities
Both Casper and Bear mattresses have outstanding cooling capabilities from the beginning. The only difference is how they execute it to make it happen: Casper utilizes its signature AirScape technology on the top polyurethane layer to allow airflow, while Bear’s combination of open-cell foam, graphite-gel infusion, and Celliant bed cover, on the other hand, helps neutralize the body’s temperature while it’s asleep. Despite being foam beds, both work well in cooling the sleeper.
The Casper and Bear have enough features to make them ideal for sleepers under 230 lbs. The memory foam layer on each mattress is designed to contour their bodies, alleviate pressure points and maintain their spine alignment.
Differences
The Casper has a dedicated zoned support layer of memory foam. The second layer of the mattress consists two layers: a soft top and bottom panel to cushion the shoulders and lower extremities, and a thicker middle one to support the hips, waist and lower back. This provides additional comfort and relief.
As mentioned previously, the Casper has medium-firm comfort. However, between it and the Bear Original, it’s much softer in comparison. Although there are some drawbacks, such as difficulty in moving, the Casper is much more comfortable for side-sleepers.

There are differences
The Purple mattress’s overall feel can be immediately noticed when you lay down on it. The Bear’s memory foam feel is still there, but the Purple Mattress has a unique surface which, when activated, becomes flexible and responsive to your body’s ever-changing movement. This gives it an advantage over all the rest. The Purple is, among other things, much easier to navigate than the Bear.
While we can appreciate its endless possibilities, it’s hard to ignore the price tag – the Purple is more expensive than the Bear mattress by around $300.
Who should use the Purple Mattress?
- People who like to sleep on the mattress’s top
- For heavyweight sleepers, a foam mattress that supports their weight is a must.
- Those who usually sleep flat on the back (shoulder and stomach sleepers can also try this)
Bear Mattress vs. Leesa (Leesa Original)
Leesa was among the first direct-to-consumer modern companies to popularize the bed-in a box delivery system. There are many models available, including all-foam and hybrid. While their bestselling Sapira and Legend hybrid beds have gained high acclaim left and right, the Leesa Original remains one of the company’s fan-favorite product offers – and their most affordable option at $1,199 (Queen-size).
The Leesa Original mattress consists of a top comfort layer of specialty polyfoam formulated by the Leesa company and a memory foam layer underneath it. Although it is a little more firm than Bear’s, its responsiveness and contouring are still excellent. With Leesa’s excellent customer hotline serving as the cherry on top of its capabilities to keep the sleeper comfortable, it’s no wonder their flagship mattress is still popular today!
Similarities
The Leesa measures approximately 10 inches tall, which is the same height as Bear’s mattress. However, they have much more in common than just height similarities. They also addressed the issue of heat buildup, which is a common problem with all-foam mattresses. The Leesa utilizes the specialty top layer to help cool down the sleeper.
The Bear and this bed also share a common trait: responsiveness. Memory foam mattresses have gained a bad rep over the years for their slow responses, but both the Leesa and Bear are exempted.
Differences
While the Leesa and Bear have memory foam and are responsive, we shouldn’t completely gloss over how each places this material. The memory foam of the Bear Original is placed as a top comfort layer. The Leesa is placed in the middle of the mattress as a transitional layer.

Nectar is a popular direct-to consumer brand in America, and has won the hearts of many sleepers. Their flagship mattress is the most popular and sought-after product of the company. It provides solid pressure relief and motion transfer.
As we further checked what else this mattress could do, we noticed many of its traits are closely similar to the Bear Original. We may have saved our closest, near-identical competitor for last, but while we can appreciate what we’ve discovered, it’s still worth noting that they have a few distinctions – we’ll go through all of it very shortly.
Similarities
Let’s start with the price. A queen-sized Nectar mattress is only $799. If you compare this price tag to the Bear mattress, you’ll notice the smaller difference between the two. The Nectar is only $50 more expensive than our old beds. Both the Bear and this mattress are premium foam beds that are very affordable.
The Nectar’s firmness level is as medium-firm as Bear’s, although one of them is very slightly stiffer than the other. It is constructed in the same way: it has a high density foundation base, transitional polyfoam at the center, and a gel-infused, memory foam top. This combination results in an ample amount of responsiveness to navigate around the bed.
Given how it’s made, the Nectar should be a perfect match for sleepers below 230 lbs. It should also be a great choice for couples, as it has the same excellent motion transfer abilities.
There are differences
You could go on and forth about how identical the Nectar or Bear mattresses are to each other. But since they’re two different bed models, we should point out the differences as well. Among the most notable is the thickness of the comfort layer. The Nectar mattress’s memory foam portion is an inch thicker than Bear’s and as a result, it’s more ideal for persons who often sleep on the side.
Who Should Use the Nectar Memory Foam Mattress?
- Those who want a medium-firm mattress that can also accommodate side sleepers
- People suffering from hip and joint pains are looking for exceptional pressure relief in a bed.
- Individuals and couples who aren’t interested in being disturbed by different movements.

We’re now nearing the end in our review of Bear vs. Casper. Purple, Leesa and Nectar. Let’s talk about their limitations. We can admire the many benefits they offer to sleepers around the world, but we need to remember that not all of them work perfectly.
Given the nature of all-foam mattresses, don’t expect many of them to have great edge support. You shouldn’t expect them to be accommodating to heavy persons, side sleepers, and stomach sleepers, either, as most are not readily equipped to handle large weights.
