Bear is one of the highly-popular mattress brands making waves for its offering of high-quality models, the most notable of which being its flagship Original Mattress. Benefits and Disadvantages
In our previous article, we were able to test the Bear mattress’s firmness level as well as its overall performance. Based on our observations, it ranks 7 out of 10 in our comfort level ranking, making it a medium-firm bed. When it came to analysing through a series of performance tests, there were a couple of fascinating things that we found:
- The pressure relief was adequate for most sleepers. Considering the memory foam is stacked on top of the high-density foundation, we observed that it held most of the body’s pressure points very well, especially at the back.
- Since we’re talking about an all-foam mattress here, you should expect it to have fantastic motion isolation abilities.
- In terms of ease of movement, the Bear’s overall construction makes it easy for individuals to change to any position, yet somehow also manages to conform their bodies well.
While it’s worth noting its fantastic benefits, we should also mention that it has a few limits, particularly when it comes to heavyweight sleepers using the mattress. The Bear Original is not as suitable for heavy individuals – they may gain the comfort and support that it delivers, but they’ll find it a bit uncomfortable in the long run.
Who should use the Bear Original?
- People who like to sleep on memory foam, but don’t enjoy the sinking sensation.

Bear Mattress vs. Casper (Casper Original)
Casper, a bed in a box brand, offers a variety of high-quality mattresses, each one designed to suit different circumstances. Casper was established in 2014. It is the first direct to consumer mattress company to promote bed-in-a box delivery.
Its flagship mattress, the Casper Original, is one of its most popular products. Standing at 12″, the Casper advertises a medium-firm comfort level that most sleepers will enjoy. Casper Original’s queen-size variant costs $1,295, which makes it more expensive than the Bear mattress of $998. Casper offers a 10-year warranty for its bestsellers and a 100-night trial period.
Similarities
Both the Casper and Bear mattresses offer stellar cooling abilities from the get-go. Only the difference between the two mattresses is in how they do it. Casper uses its AirScape technology to allow airflow. Bear uses open-cell foam, graphite gel infusion and Celliant bed covers to neutralize body temperature while it sleeps. Despite being foam beds, both work well in cooling the sleeper.
The Casper and Bear have enough features to make them ideal for sleepers under 230 lbs. Each also has a memory foam layer built to conform their figure, relieve pressure points, and keep their spine in alignment.
Differences
The Casper features a memory foam support layer that is zoned. The mattress’s second layer consists of two soft top and bottom panels to cushion the shoulders and lower limbs and a firmer one in the middle to support the hips, waist, and lower back, providing the body with added comfort and relief.
The Casper, as previously mentioned, has a medium-firm comfort level. It’s much more comfortable than the Bear Original. While some disadvantages such as difficulties in movement may arise, we find the Casper much more comfortable for strict side-sleepers.

Bear Mattress vs. Purple (Purple Mattress)
Purple is a sleep company specializing in developing innovative technologies designed and optimized to improve a person’s sleep quality. Their purple gel-grid polymer is what you may be most familiar with. This material was originally used to cushion wheelchairs. There are differences
The Purple mattress’s overall feel can be immediately noticed when you lay down on it. The Bear’s memory foam feel is still there, but the Purple Mattress has a unique surface which, when activated, becomes flexible and responsive to your body’s ever-changing movement. This gives it an advantage over all the rest. The Purple Mattress is easier to navigate than that of the Bear.
While we can appreciate its endless possibilities, it’s hard to ignore the price tag – the Purple is more expensive than the Bear mattress by around $300.
Who should use the Purple Mattress?
- People who like to sleep on the mattress’s top
- Heavyweight sleepers looking for a foam bed that can support its weight to the best of its abilities
- This is for those who sleep flat on their backs (shoulder or stomach sleepers may also consider this).
Bear Mattress vs. Leesa (Leesa Original)
Leesa was among the first direct-to-consumer modern companies to popularize the bed-in a box delivery system. It offers a wide range of models, from all-foam to hybrid. The company’s bestselling Sapira hybrid beds and Legend hybrid beds have received high praise, but the Leesa Original is still a fan favorite product offering. It costs $1,199 (Queen size) and is their most affordable option.
The Leesa Original mattress consists of a top comfort layer of specialty polyfoam formulated by the Leesa company and a memory foam layer underneath it. Its firmness may be a bit softer than Bear’s in comparison, but it manages to strike a balance between contouring and responsiveness. With Leesa’s excellent customer hotline serving as the cherry on top of its capabilities to keep the sleeper comfortable, it’s no wonder their flagship mattress is still popular today!
Similarities
The Leesa is around 10 inches in total height, which happens to be the same as Bear’s mattress. However, they have much more in common than just height similarities. One of those is how they addressed the pressing issue of overheating, a recurring concern with all-foam mattresses. The Leesa utilizes the specialty top layer to help cool down the sleeper.
Another thing this bed has in common with the Bear is responsiveness. Memory foam mattresses are notorious for slow response times over the years. However, both the Leesa as well as the Bear are exempted.
Differences
While the Leesa and Bear have memory foam and are responsive, we shouldn’t completely gloss over how each places this material. The memory foam of the Bear Original is placed as a top comfort layer. The Leesa is placed in the middle of the mattress as a transitional layer.

Nectar is one of America’s most popular direct-to-consumer brands, stealing the hearts of a diverse range of sleepers. Their flagship mattress is the most popular and sought-after product of the company. It provides solid pressure relief and motion transfer.
We noticed that many of the characteristics of this mattress are very similar to those found in the Bear Original. Although we may have saved the closest competitor, we still appreciate what we found. We’ll be going through every detail very soon.
Similarities
Let’s start with the price. A queen-sized Nectar mattress is only $799. If you compare this price tag to the Bear mattress, you’ll notice the smaller difference between the two. The Nectar is only $50 more expensive than our old beds. This means both this mattress and the Bear are among the most affordable premium foam beds available on the market.
The Nectar’s firmness level is as medium-firm as Bear’s, although one of them is very slightly stiffer than the other. The construction is also identical: it is stacked by a high-density foundation base, a transitional polyfoam in the middle, and a gel-infused memory foam surface to top it off. This combination results in an ample amount of responsiveness to navigate around the bed.
Given how it’s made, the Nectar should be a perfect match for sleepers below 230 lbs. It should also be a great choice for couples, as it has the same excellent motion transfer abilities.
There are differences
We could go on and on about how the Nectar and Bear mattresses are identically similar to each other. We should also highlight the differences between these two bed models because they are different. The comfort layer’s thickness is one of the most noticeable. The Nectar mattress’s memory layer is one inch thicker than Bear’s. This makes it more suitable for people who sleep on their sides.
Who Should Use the Nectar Memory Foam Mattress?
- Those who want a medium-firm mattress that can also accommodate side sleepers
- Persons suffering from joint and hip pains looking for a bed with exceptional pressure relief

Last Thoughts Bear Mattress Vs Below The Bed
Now that we’re nearing the end of the review of Bear vs. Casper, Purple, Leesa, and Nectar, we must talk briefly about their limits. We can admire the many benefits they offer to sleepers around the world, but we need to remember that not all of them work perfectly.
Given the nature of all-foam mattresses, don’t expect many of them to have great edge support. They aren’t designed to accommodate heavy people, stomach sleepers and side sleepers.
With all of that out of the way, we’d like to share some important tips to keep in mind in searching for the right bed:
- Make sure the mattress’s materials are strong enough to support your stomach, hips, shoulders and back.
- Inspect the bed’s surface and responsiveness – if you prefer to sleep into it and do not want to move too much, the comfort level should be softer; if you change positions often, the firmer surface may be your best pick
