Benefits and disadvantages
In our previous article, we were able to test the Bear mattress’s firmness level as well as its overall performance. It ranks 7th out of 10 in comfort rating, which makes it a medium-firm mattress. When it came to analysing through a series of performance tests, there were a couple of fascinating things that we found:
- Most sleepers found the pressure relief adequate. Considering the memory foam is stacked on top of the high-density foundation, we observed that it held most of the body’s pressure points very well, especially at the back.

While it’s worth noting its fantastic benefits, we should also mention that it has a few limits, particularly when it comes to heavyweight sleepers using the mattress. The Bear Original isn’t as good for heavy people. They may find the mattress a little uncomfortable, although they might get the support and comfort it provides.

Bear Mattress vs. Casper (Casper Original)
Casper is a bed-in-a-box brand that offers a wide range of high-quality mattress models, each designed for many different personal circumstances, at affordable prices. Casper was established in 2014. It is the first direct to consumer mattress company to promote bed-in-a box delivery.
The Casper Original is its flagship mattress and it is one of the most loved. Standing at 12″, the Casper advertises a medium-firm comfort level that most sleepers will enjoy. Casper Original’s queen-size variant costs $1,295, which makes it more expensive than the Bear mattress of $998. The Casper company offers a 10-year warranty on its namesake bestseller and a 100-night sleep trial period.
Similarities
Both Casper and Bear mattresses have outstanding cooling capabilities from the beginning. Only the difference between the two mattresses is in how they do it. Casper uses its AirScape technology to allow airflow. Bear uses open-cell foam, graphite gel infusion and Celliant bed covers to neutralize body temperature while it sleeps. Both foam beds work well at cooling the sleeper, despite being foam beds.
Both the Bear and Casper have enough features that they are suitable for those under 230 pounds. The memory foam layer on each mattress is designed to contour their bodies, alleviate pressure points and maintain their spine alignment.
Differences
The Casper features a memory foam support layer that is zoned. The second layer of the mattress consists two layers: a soft top and bottom panel to cushion the shoulders and lower extremities, and a thicker middle one to support the hips, waist and lower back. This provides additional comfort and relief.
The Casper, as previously mentioned, has a medium-firm comfort level. It’s much more comfortable than the Bear Original. Although there are some drawbacks, such as difficulty in moving, the Casper is much more comfortable for side-sleepers.

Similarities

Differences
The Purple’s overall feel is so different that you can immediately tell when you first lay down on it. While the Bear has the traditional memory foam feel, the Purple Mattress has a unique surface that, upon activation, becomes very flexible and responsive to the body’s ever-changing movements, giving it an elevated advantage over the rest. The Purple Mattress is easier to navigate than that of the Bear.
While we can appreciate its endless possibilities, it’s hard to ignore the price tag – the Purple is more expensive than the Bear mattress by around $300.
Who should use the Purple Mattress?
- Those who prefer sleeping on top of the mattress’s surface
- Heavyweight sleepers looking for a foam bed that can support its weight to the best of its abilities
- This is for those who sleep flat on their backs (shoulder or stomach sleepers may also consider this).
Bear Mattress vs. Leesa (Leesa Original)
Leesa is among the first modern direct-to-consumer companies that, like Casper, have popularized the bed-in-a-box delivery system. There are many models available, including all-foam and hybrid. The company’s bestselling Sapira hybrid beds and Legend hybrid beds have received high praise, but the Leesa Original is still a fan favorite product offering. It costs $1,199 (Queen size) and is their most affordable option.
The Leesa Original mattress is made up of a layer of memory foam and a layer of special polyfoam. Although it is a little more firm than Bear’s, its responsiveness and contouring are still excellent. Similarities
The Leesa is around 10 inches in total height, which happens to be the same as Bear’s mattress. They share more than height similarities. One of those is how they addressed the pressing issue of overheating, a recurring concern with all-foam mattresses. The Leesa utilizes the specialty top layer to help cool down the sleeper.
The Bear and this bed also share a common trait: responsiveness. Memory foam mattresses are notorious for slow response times over the years. However, both the Leesa as well as the Bear are exempted.
Differences
The memory foam in the Bear and Leesa is responsive and has memory foam, but we should not overlook how each uses this material. The Bear Original’s memory foam is used as a top comfort layer. With the Leesa, on the other hand, we see it sandwiched in the middle as a transitional layer.

Nectar is one of America’s most popular direct-to-consumer brands, stealing the hearts of a diverse range of sleepers. They’re best known for their flagship mattress, the company’s most in-demand product, and among the most sought-after overall. It delivers solid pressure relief and motion transfer.
As we further checked what else this mattress could do, we noticed many of its traits are closely similar to the Bear Original. We may have saved our closest, near-identical competitor for last, but while we can appreciate what we’ve discovered, it’s still worth noting that they have a few distinctions – we’ll go through all of it very shortly.
Similarities
First, let’s talk about the price: a Queen-sized variant of the Nectar mattress costs only $799. If you compare this price tag to the Bear mattress, you’ll notice the smaller difference between the two. The Nectar is only $50 more expensive than our old beds. The Nectar’s firmness level is as medium-firm as Bear’s, although one of them is very slightly stiffer than the other. The construction is also identical: it is stacked by a high-density foundation base, a transitional polyfoam in the middle, and a gel-infused memory foam surface to top it off. The combination gives the bed a lot of responsiveness, making it easy to move around.
Given how it’s made, the Nectar should be a perfect match for sleepers below 230 lbs. It should also be a great choice for couples, as it has the same excellent motion transfer abilities.
There are differences
You could go on and forth about how identical the Nectar or Bear mattresses are to each other. But since they’re two different bed models, we should point out the differences as well. Among the most notable is the thickness of the comfort layer. The Nectar mattress’s memory foam portion is an inch thicker than Bear’s and as a result, it’s more ideal for persons who often sleep on the side.
Who should use the Nectar Memory Foam Mattress
- People who prefer a medium-firm mattress, which can also be used by side sleepers
