Benefits and Disadvantages
In our previous article, we were able to test the Bear mattress’s firmness level as well as its overall performance. It ranks 7th out of 10 in comfort rating, which makes it a medium-firm mattress. When it came to analysing through a series of performance tests, there were a couple of fascinating things that we found:
- The pressure relief was adequate for most sleepers. We found that the memory foam was stacked on top the high-density foundation. This meant that it held most pressure points well, particularly at the back.

The Bear Original is not as suitable for heavy individuals – they may gain the comfort and support that it delivers, but they’ll find it a bit uncomfortable in the long run.

Casper is a bed-in-a-box brand that offers a wide range of high-quality mattress models, each designed for many different personal circumstances, at affordable prices. Casper was established in 2014. It is the first direct to consumer mattress company to promote bed-in-a box delivery.
Its flagship mattress, the Casper Original, is one of its most popular products. Standing at 12″, the Casper advertises a medium-firm comfort level that most sleepers will enjoy. Casper Original’s queen-size variant costs $1,295, which makes it more expensive than the Bear mattress of $998. Casper offers a 10-year warranty for its bestsellers and a 100-night trial period.
Similarities
Both Casper and Bear mattresses have outstanding cooling capabilities from the beginning. Only the difference between the two mattresses is in how they do it. Casper uses its AirScape technology to allow airflow. Bear uses open-cell foam, graphite gel infusion and Celliant bed covers to neutralize body temperature while it sleeps. Both foam beds work well at cooling the sleeper, despite being foam beds.
Both the Bear and Casper have enough features that they are suitable for those under 230 pounds. Each also has a memory foam layer built to conform their figure, relieve pressure points, and keep their spine in alignment.
Differences
The Casper has a dedicated zoned support layer of memory foam. The second layer of the mattress consists two layers: a soft top and bottom panel to cushion the shoulders and lower extremities, and a thicker middle one to support the hips, waist and lower back. The Casper, as previously mentioned, has a medium-firm comfort level. It’s much more comfortable than the Bear Original. Although there are some drawbacks, such as difficulty in moving, the Casper is much more comfortable for side-sleepers.

Differences
The Purple’s overall feel is so different that you can immediately tell when you first lay down on it. The Bear’s memory foam feel is still there, but the Purple Mattress has a unique surface which, when activated, becomes flexible and responsive to your body’s ever-changing movement. This gives it an advantage over all the rest. The Purple is, among other things, much easier to navigate than the Bear.
We can appreciate the endless possibilities of the Purple mattress, but it is hard to overlook the steep price tag. The Bear mattress is around $300 more expensive than the Purple.
Who should use the Purple Mattress?
- Those who prefer sleeping on top of the mattress’s surface
- For heavyweight sleepers, a foam mattress that supports their weight is a must.

The company’s bestselling Sapira hybrid beds and Legend hybrid beds have received high praise, but the Leesa Original is still a fan favorite product offering. It costs $1,199 (Queen size) and is their most affordable option.
The Leesa Original mattress consists of a top comfort layer of specialty polyfoam formulated by the Leesa company and a memory foam layer underneath it. Its firmness may be a bit softer than Bear’s in comparison, but it manages to strike a balance between contouring and responsiveness. The Leesa measures approximately 10 inches tall, which is the same height as Bear’s mattress. They share more than height similarities. Nectar is one of America’s most popular direct-to-consumer brands, stealing the hearts of a diverse range of sleepers. They’re best known for their flagship mattress, the company’s most in-demand product, and among the most sought-after overall. It provides solid pressure relief and motion transfer.
We noticed that many of the characteristics of this mattress are very similar to those found in the Bear Original. We may have saved our closest, near-identical competitor for last, but while we can appreciate what we’ve discovered, it’s still worth noting that they have a few distinctions – we’ll go through all of it very shortly.
Similarities
Let’s start with the price. A queen-sized Nectar mattress is only $799. If you compare this price tag to the Bear mattress, you’ll notice the smaller difference between the two. While our previous beds cost hundreds of dollars higher, the Nectar only has a $50 difference. This means both this mattress and the Bear are among the most affordable premium foam beds available on the market.
The Nectar’s firmness level is as medium-firm as Bear’s, although one of them is very slightly stiffer than the other. It is constructed in the same way: it has a high density foundation base, transitional polyfoam at the center, and a gel-infused, memory foam top. This combination results in an ample amount of responsiveness to navigate around the bed.

We could go on and on about how the Nectar and Bear mattresses are identically similar to each other. But since they’re two different bed models, we should point out the differences as well. Among the most notable is the thickness of the comfort layer. The Nectar mattress’s memory foam portion is an inch thicker than Bear’s and as a result, it’s more ideal for persons who often sleep on the side.
